Instructions for Contributors

Submissions

Before you decide to submit your article, please take a look at our release form (click here). By submitting your article, you agree to sign this form if your article is accepted.

We do not normally consider articles that have already been published in English, and we cannot consider articles that are currently submitted for possible publication elsewhere.

Please submit the entire document—text and graphics—as a .pdf file by email to pnm@u.washington.edu.  If it is accepted, we will then need text in one of the standard word-processing formats such as OpenOffice or Word, and graphics as high-resolution (600 dpi) TIFF, Postscript, or PDF files (see below).   If none of these are possible for you, please contact us at pnm@u.washington.edu or by postal mail.

The format for style in footnotes, bibliographies, and other matter should follow one of those described by the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style (or see any recent issue of Perspectives of New Music).

The address for submissions and editorial correspondence is:

Final Text Formats

Once a text has been accepted for publication, you must supply all copyright clearances to us as specified on our release form, a signed copy of this release form, and final text in one of the following formats: For text, use Open Office (.odt), MS Word (.doc), WordPerfect (.wpd), or Rich Text (.rtf); for graphics, see the formats listed below. We currently do not have the capability of editing LaTeX files, so if your text is in this format, please convert it to .rtf before sending it to us.  Your files should be sent as email attachments to pnm@u.washington.edu. Alternatively, the files may be sent to us on a CD or USB flash drive to the production address listed below.

Music examples or other graphics should also be sent with each graphic saved as a separate file. Recommended formats for graphics are the following: Tag Image File Format (Grayscale or Black-and-white .tif, preferred format), Previewable Encapsulated PostScript (.eps), or Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf). All images must have a resolution of 600 dpi.  We will also accept Finale (.mus), Sibelius (.sib), NoteWriter, and NoteAbility Pro files.  All graphics are called "Example [number]" and numbered consecutively in the article.  We would also like you to supply camera-ready copy for each graphic in the form of laser printout or other high-quality paper copy. These should be sent to the mailing address shown below.

Be advised that you need not spend time on the exact placement of your examples in your text document, as we have to re-size and reposition everything to fit our page size. We use Open Office software for typesetting. We will try to honor any requests for special formats integral to the meaning of your text, but by sending us your text, you agree that our decisions in matters of house style and format will be definitive.
